INFORMATION  FOR  PARENTS

Attendance/Absence/ Lateness

It is a legal requirement for children to attend school.  Please contact the school in any one of the following ways to inform the school of ANY absences:

If parents choose to have their child absent from school for long periods please contact the Principal and the class room teacher.  Thank you.  Our process is that the child is withdrawn after 20 days of absence from school.

Lateness:  Late students must REPORT to the OFFICE on arrival at school please to report in late.  Thank you. 

Access to Pupils

Please report problems you or your child may have with other children.  Parents are not to deal with or chastise or discipline children that are NOT their own.  This is not recommended by the police.

Administration Area

The front door is for the use of visitors and adults.  Please know that our children must use the back door to the Administration Area.

Behaviour Standards

The school promotes the following Values:

Wānanga - Collective Learning Practices

The school has designed 4 Behaviour Matrices that tell us all, what is expected of our children in various school settings.  

a. The bus/ minibus.  b.  Learning spaces.  c. Active Supervision Spaces.  d.  Offsite Spaces.                          We TEACH our students the behaviours that are required for “Te Manu Tu Ke – The Bird that Stands Unique!”    “Kia Totika te Mahi” (Do the Right Thing)is our guiding maxim for all of us.  

Bicycles - Pahikara

Cycle helmets are compulsory by law.  

Orange jackets are advisable.

Bicycles must NOT be ridden in the grounds.

Bullying - Tūkino Tangata

Parents, whanau and students and others PLEASE report any incidents of bullying to the school.

Do NOT handle yourself – at all!

Praise your child when he/she reports “bullying” but let the school investigate. 

It is illegal for parents or any Whanau members, to approach or speak to any other child.    Instead, they will report to the school. 

Cell phones / Mobile Devices

Personal Devices are not to be used during school hours, including intervals and lunchtimes. This restriction applies to all students, regardless of their year level.

Personal Devices should be turned off or set to silent mode and stored securely in students' bags or lockers during school hours.

If a student is found with a personal device on them during school hours, it will be confiscated by the teacher. The confiscated device will be held securely and returned to the student at the end of the day.

If a student is found with a personal device for a second time, it will result in the need for a parental meeting. During the meeting, the device will be returned to the parent.

Cybersafety Agreement and their Mobile Device Agreement. 

 In the advent of misuse or unsafe use, devices will be immediately confiscated and parents asked to collect them. 

Children’s Code of Conduct

EACH child attending Manutuke School will be expected to:

Practice our Values of Rangatiratanga, Kotahitanga, Wananga, Manaakitanga,  and Whanaungatanga. 

Show Respect for Others, their Space and their Property.

Class Trips/EOTC

During the year, your child will use outdoor experiences to assist or consolidate their learning.  You will be notified regarding dates, destination, requirements and costs.  Please note that if you want to take your child away after a trip e.g. a visit to town, the teacher in charge must be notified.  On no account will children be allowed to leave unless notified by a Parent or Guardian.  Only pupils from that class will take part in the class trip/activities.  

Parental permission will be sought at enrolment.  Parents may be expected to ensure that their child has one-to-one whanau member support if they are classified as being At Risk for their own safety or for the safety of others.  Stay-over camps require additional permission from parents and the Board.

CONCERNS or COMPLAINTS

In the event of an issue arising, please approach the Class Teacher in the first instance if it relates to a child or that teacher.  (1st instance)

In the event that the complaint is not resolved, then please follow this line of contact:   

Contact the Teacher's Senior Teacher or Syndicate Leader (2nd instance)

Contact the Principal, (3rd instance)

Contact the Board of Trustees (in writing if you feel that none of the before steps have helped)

In our experience concerns are normally resolved quickly when the concerns are communicated promptly.

Whilst we have many support systems in place to ensure concerns are dealt with effectively, please appreciate we value your input in alerting us if you feel a problem exists that requires attention.

Dress Code:  School UNIFORM.

The uniform, for all children, is compulsory.   - Purchased / Ordered through the Office.

Please name items of clothing and towels! Donations of unused or used clothing from past pupils are readily accepted. 

Damage to Property

If a child accidentally breaks something, including windows, they may be asked to help pay for repairs.  For deliberate acts the child will be expected to seek full costs.

Dental Nurse

A Motor van is used for the Dental Nurses workstation now.  The Motor van is based at our school for only part of the year.  Parents, Kohanga Reo, the Play Centre will be informed at the time.  You may also contact Wahaora Dental Clinic - 867 5096.  

Dogs

DOGS are NOT PERMITTED in the school yard.

Fees/Sports

During the year, your child will be required to pay sports’ fees for out of school sports .  ‘NO PAY.  NO PLAY’  

Fire & Earthquake Drill

To ensure that we can carry out our Fire, Earthquake and Tsunami Drills – it is urgent that ALL visitors sign in and out at the Office.

Front Gate/Other Gates

The front gate MUST BE KEPT CLEAR.   Sometimes the bus comes in other odd times, for class trips.  Please obey BUS and NO PARKING yellow lines/signs at all times. Thank you.

Hats

During Term 1 and Term 4 of each year, your child/ren can wear the uniform SUN HAT or any other suitable SUN HAT or CAP, at all times, outside of the classroom. ‘No Hat - No Play Policy’ (No Hat - Stay in the Shade)

Health Problems

The school must be notified of any health problems your child may have.  A Beginning of the Year Form will be sent out during the Term 1 or when required, requesting this information.  

Please use the holidays to ensure that head-lice are eradicated. 

Head Lice/ Kutus or Nits.

This is a perennial problem in schools. If we notice a problem in a class we will send home a "Head Lice Information Sheet".

Please work with us to ensure your children’s learning is not affected

Homework

Homework is aimed at children being able to manage their own homework, maintenance or learning of basic facts, spelling or reading of readers from school. Please contact your classroom teacher if you have any concerns at all. We will continue to support Homework requests.

Injury to pupils

If your child is injured in an accident at school, we will immediately inform you, or contact your given emergency contact.   In a case of not being able to contact you, we will make necessary arrangements.  Please ensure that your contact details are up to date.

Interviews

If you wish to see your child’s Teacher, please call and arrange a time out-of-class hours.  The Principal will be free to see Parents after an appointment is made through the office.  In February we hold our first meeting for Parents to meet Teacher.  In June of each year our formal reporting interviews are held.  An interview time selection form will be issued to parents, for teachers to arrange suitable times.

Jewellery

For safety and security, jewellery is NOT permitted at school UNLESS it is for The Kapa Haka Performing students.  Pierced ears may have studs in them and children may bring a watch to school.  Pierced nose and tongue jewellery are banned.  Taonga around the child’s neck can be a danger to their safety also. 

Leaving School Grounds

Children will remain at School from the time of arrival in the morning to 2:30pm.  If your child is to leave the grounds, please let us know and who they are permitted to be leave with. 

Lost Property

Unnamed clothing will be kept for one week and then sold on or given to others.

The school will seek whanau input to review the current uniform to improve it, and to give better access to it, for all pupils

Lunches

Every child will have access to the free lunches.  Please note that we are a WAI/ WATER school!

Rules

The school has Behaviour Matrices for different areas e.g. the Playground, the Classroom, on EOTC, the Bus, the ICT rooms, which the teachers will teach to.  

School Nurse

The Public Health Nurse can visit our school on request.  The school contacts the Public Health Nurse to access advice and support for any children with Health needs.  This service is free – take advantage of it.  

School Times 

We are on an automatic bell timing system.  Please act quickly at the following bell times are:

08:35a.m. School begins.

10:30a.m. – 10.50a.m. Interval

10.50 to 12.30p.m.  Learning Time.   

12.30 to 1.00p.m. Lunch 

1.00 to 02.25p.m. Learning Time

2.20 to 2.25p.m. Bus Organisation begins

2.30pm - End of kura

Skateboarding/Roller Blades/Scooters/ Bicycles

Skateboards, scooters and bicycles are not to be ridden on the school’s grounds.

However in the event of ‘Wheels Day’s exceptions will be made.

Smoke Free Policy

Manutuke School is SMOKE FREE/VAPE FREE kura. Do not smoke or vape in our car- parks either.  On EOTC events the school continues to practice The  Smoke free / Vape free  policy practice.

Social Worker in School

Manutuke School uses Te Aka Ora Charitable Fund with most other schools to access our Social Worker. This person  who is a valued part of our Special Needs team,  advocates for our parents, whanau and children.  Parents/ whanau can access the school’s SWIS by ringing the school. 

Special Needs

The school has systems that identify those children who require additional support for learning or behaviour needs.  The SENCO and Principal can advise you if you believe that your child requires extra or other learning options.   

 Parents are invited to list your children’s passions, interests, clubs, talents, strengths and gifts.  Thank you. 

Stationery

All stationery requirements will be provided by the school in 2023.  There will be no charge.

Swapping, Trading & Selling

Children are NOT permitted to sell or trade their property at school.  

Sweets, Chewing Gum and Sweet soft Drinks and sweet drinks

Manutuke School is a WAI-WATER Kura!   Sweets, chewing gum, sweet soft drinks and sweet drinks are NOT permitted at school or on class trips, for day to day schooling.  

Soft drinks and homemade sweets may be used in treats or for Fundraising Events.

Swimming/School Sports/Athletics/Cross Country

All Manutuke School children take part in the physical sporting activities of the curriculum. Parents' support is   valued.  In 2023 we will offer the Swim-Safe programme for Year 1-6 students.

Swimming Pool

The SWIMMING POOL is available in terms 1 and 4,  for full use,  by the school only, during school times only.   

Togs only for swimming!   Rash shirts can be used but NO day-clothing or undies. 

We will use SWIMSAFE with 10 lessons at Elgin or the Olympic Pool to support swimming programmes. 

Tangi

Please note that due to the culture and curriculum – marautanga,  of the whole school, all children may be expected on exceptional occasions to attend a tangi. 

Toys

Expensive personal toys are best kept at home. School WILL not accept any responsibility of any loss or damage or theft.

ICT Games, Audio Equipment owned by children

Senior children may use Mobile/Device agreement to allow them access to i-Mobile/Devices for in class learning.  Misuse means instant confiscation i.e. the device is handed to the Principal, parents contacted to come and collect the device or agree to the Principal holding it.
